How much film is on your reel?
Measure straight across the reel, from one edge to the other. That width tells you roughly how many feet of film it holds.
- Measure the reel itself, not the box it came in.
- Reels are not always full, so think of this as a guide.
- Super 8 film with sound has a thin brown stripe along the edge. See how to tell.
Silent or sound?
Does your film have sound?
Hold the film up to a light and look along its edges. Super 8 film with sound has a thin brown stripe running along one edge, and some have a second, thinner stripe on the other side.
We capture sound from Super 8 film only. Standard 8mm film with a sound stripe is rare, and we digitize it as picture only.
To tell 8mm from Super 8, look at the holes: standard 8mm has larger holes, while Super 8 has smaller holes and a bigger picture.
